This is meant to be death coming for him and he is metaphorically and literally in danger from death. An example of this is when Bowie sings “I’m in danger” and we see a hand coming for him through a crane shot representing body language. Linking to Andrew Goodwin’s theory the music video actively reinforces his idea about the relationship between lyrics to visuals throughout. No lyrics can be heard when we see this woman linked to death and focus of strings making an eerie sound. Every time death comes close to Bowie we also hear a clear change in tone of the song. The cupboard seems to reflect the idea of death whilst the woman looking is a literal representation of death itself coming for Bowie.

The video opens with a slow tracking shot of a cupboard door opening leading to a woman peering through the crack of the door towards a bed. The music video is a visual representation of the pain and treatment he was going through leading up to the day of his death. Bowie was told he was dying of cancer and would die in the next 6 months when producing the album ‘Dark Star’ which was later released in 2016. Linking directly to death, death is like a prison whereby people can’t escape it and are left with nobody to help them.ĭavid Bowie’s ‘Lazarus’ music video is one of the most interesting yet genius video’s ever created. This looks as if he is in a prison of some sort. As seen on his top the light shadows are clearly creating a striped pattern onto it. The shot is in the exact same position as the initial shot and shows him walking slowly backwards towards the open cupboard. He is taken by death and we can see him moving slowly towards it. Finally, at the very end of the music video Bowie descends to death. This is very interesting because we know Bowie was hard on drugs throughout his lifetime so this may have been done on purpose. He holds the pen as if he is getting a hit from heroine in a way and like he in injecting himself. However, what may not be as easy to see is the way his body language is. This is easy enough to understand it’s a visual of Bowie writing the Album we are listening to and maybe a bit deeper but the goodbye to his fans because he is dying. Towards the middle of the video an interesting scene is shot whereby Bowie picks up a pen and begins to write with it. He is dancing in a very flamboyant way which reflects his sexuality and personality making up his persona. To do this they decided to include a scene where Bowie dances. Later in the video the record label clearly wanted to reflect Bowie’s past life and experiences which make him who he is. This is visually representing his lyric however he is also referring to the drugs he was on at this time during his treatment.
